Opening Statements For Grandmother Charged in Killing Grandson

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Opening statements are scheduled Tuesday in the trial of a 74-year-old suburban Detroit woman in the shooting death of her 17-year-old grandson.

Sandra Layne is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Jonathan Hoffman. A jury was seated Monday.

Jonathan was shot multiple times May 18 in the condo he shared with his grandparents in Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township, northwest of Detroit. He was living there while his mother and father were divorcing and living outside Michigan.

Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota has said the killing was in self-defense.

An autopsy revealed that Jonathan was shot three times in the chest, once in the abdomen and once in his left arm. Tests show the teen had traces of synthetic marijuana in his body.
