JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) - In a nationwide competition, Michigan ranked fourth for major new corporate projects and expansions of existing ones in 2012.
Compared with other communities of its size, Jackson came in second in the nation, tying with Battle Creek, for business expansions and new projects last year.
Amy Torres, vice president of the Enterprise Group of Jackson, says recognition by Site Selection Magazine, a global business publication, puts Jackson on the map for companies looking to build.
In 2012, 13 new projects and expansions that created at least 50 jobs, had an investment of a million dollars, or expanded facilities at least 20,000 square feet.
The recession hit the city hard because of its large manufacturing base and the community fell fast Torres says. But manufacturing is getting stronger, which could be another reason the area is making a comeback.
"We are rebounding more quickly than some of the other Michigan cities and other states," said Torres. She said Jackson's unemployment rate is dropping faster than the state's
"Jackson needs to create new jobs. And every time a plant expands or someone decides to locate here, it usually creates new jobs. And that's what it's all about, investment in jobs," she adds.
According to the enterprise group, just one new full-time job indirectly creates nearly another full-time equivalent.
Torres estimates that between 300-500 new jobs were created in Jackson last year through these business projects--not including jobs that may have been indirectly created.
