Michigan Funeral Home Employee Reaches Plea

IONIA, Mich. (AP) - A former Michigan funeral home employee who authorities say embezzled nearly $500,000 from 2008 through 2010 has reached a plea deal.

Marti Schrauben, of Portland, appeared Tuesday in Ionia County Circuit Court to enter the pleas stemming from his time working at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home in Ionia. He's agreed to repay the money and could get a year in jail when sentenced.

He pleaded guilty to uttering and publishing. He also pleaded no contest to four other counts.

Schrauben originally was charged with 27 counts related to racketeering and embezzlement. Authorities say he created false death certificates and sent them to insurance companies to receive payment from policies, and took money from pre-paid funerals.

Funeral home owner Michael Lehman has told the Sentinel-Standard of Ionia he's honoring agreements customers made.
