LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan government is spending millions of dollars a year to fend off an increase in online attacks on state records.
The Detroit News reports Michigan spends $10 million a year on 23 technicians who staff an around-the-clock electronics security center. The state says it has about 187,000 cyberattacks a day, up 19 percent from about 157,500 a day in 2010.
The attacks range from simple attempts to probe for a weak spot in the system to coordinated efforts using automated software.
Gov. Rick Snyder says online crime is a major security issue. He co-chairs a cybersecurity resource center with the National Governor's Association.
Michigan's department of Technology, Management and Budget handles information technology and cybersecurity for state departments and agencies.
