HOWELL, Mich. (WLNS) - Elizabeth Smart spoke at Cleary University in Howell on Thursday. Smart became an activist for sexual abuse and kidnap prevention after she was taken from her home in Utah at age 14 and held captive for nine months in 2002.
Smart made a point that kidnapping is one thing, but everyone knows somebody who has been the victim of sexual abuse. She says because she was kidnapped and raped daily, her story hits home for many people who are scared to report sexual crimes because of the taboos that go along with them.
"I feel very lucky that I can go out and speak and that I can make a difference. So in that way, I'm grateful I was kidnapped because I would never be like, 'oh please, I want another kidnapping that was just a vacation.' I'd never say that, but I can be grateful for what it's done for me in my life and the voice it's allowed me to have. The difference between speaking out and not speaking out is stopping someone from hurting another child or another person and so it's incredibly important," Smart said.
She now has her own foundation that spreads awareness about child abductions.
In addition to Elizabeth Smart, the Livingston Economic Club also honored local law enforcement officers for the work they do to prevent abuse and kidnapping in the community.
