Lansing City Council To Discuss Vicious Dog Ordinance

Mayor Virg Bernero has urged the Lansing City Council to pass a Vicious Dog Ordinance saying that it would cut down on the number of bites and attacks happening around the city.

At Monday night's Council Meeting, homeowners gave 19 letters to council members expressing their opposition to a breed-specific ordinance.

Since 2010 there have been about 30 dogs put down in the city for multiple reasons, and the main breed involved were pitbulls.

Council member Jody Washington says she needs more time to decide if a new ordinance is what's best for the city.

"This has to be data driven not emotionally driven, I want to get the legislation that we already have, find out how we can work together and possibly enfore what we already have on the books," says Washington.

The topic will be up for discussion at the Public Safety Committee Meeting, Tuesday, March 19th.
