GM Looks to Expand in Downtown Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero announced Thursday that the General Motors Lansing Grand River plant is looking to expand downtown.

The expansion would bring over $38 million in new investments and create around 150 jobs.

If approved, construction could move forward as soon as July 2013 and would be finished by 2015.

Bernero noted that the proposed expansion is not a done deal; GM has requested a tax incentive for industrial facilities that would help make their investment economically viable. The incentive application will be submitted to the Lansing City Council at their meeting on Monday.

The plant produces the Cadillac ATS, which was named North American Car of the Year and will soon produce the Chevrolet Camaro. The most recent investment to LGR was in 2011 with a $190 million project which prepared for the ATS.
