TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered Enbridge Inc. to dredge three areas in the Kalamazoo River to remove additional oil from a 2010 pipeline spill of more than 800,000 gallons.
EPA said Thursday it has documented the presence of submerged oil in those locations. It says removing sediments from the river bottom will prevent the oil from drifting downstream to places where it would be harder or impossible to recover.
Enbridge must respond to the agency within five days and provide a dredging plan within 15 days. The operation is expected to begin this spring and EPA says it shouldn't require closing any of the river.
Enbridge spokesman Jason Manshum says the company will study the EPA order and "respond accordingly."
The pipeline runs from Indiana to Sarnia, Ontario.
