City Council Reviews General Motors Expansion Proposal

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The financial health plan isn't the only thing on the Lansing council's agenda Monday night. They're also getting a first look at the tax breaks General Motors said it needs to expand the Grand River Plant.

The paperwork asks for nearly $40 million in tax exemptions over a 12-year period, with two years penciled in for construction. Those number breaks down like this:

  • $35 million for land and building improvements
  • $3.6 million for machines and equipment

6 News spoke with UAW Local 652 President Mike Green who said he doesn't know if that will mean a new stand alone building or an expansion of the current Lansing Grand River Plant.

He also said that's possible because of the dedicated membership, council is asked to review the exemption as well as set a public hearing scheduled for April 15 at 7p.m.

Nick Perreault will have more on this tonight on 6 News at 11.
