Grandmother Sentenced

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor says a 75-year-old woman convicted of killing her grandson likely faces at least 14 years in prison.

Sandra Layne was found guilty of second-degree murder Tuesday in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Jonathan Hoffman last year in West Bloomfield Township.

Layne gets her sentence on April 18 in Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac.

Prosecutor Paul Walton says Layne faces at least 12 years in prison for the killing and an additional two years for using a gun during a felony. Her ultimate release after a minimum sentence would be determined by the Michigan parole board.

Defense lawyer Jerome Sabbota says Layne is "devastated' by the verdict. Layne says she shot her grandson in self-defense but the jury didn't agree.
