Why Family Planning Sees An Uptick In March...

OKEMOS, Mich. (WLNS) - Family planning for men may revolve around March Madness. The number of vasectomy procedures tends to rise during the tournament.

It's a life-changing procedure that takes five to ten minutes to do. Brandi Alwine, a physician's assistant at Capital Urological Associates said many have it because they no longer want to have kids.

And March seems to be a popular month to do it. Just ask Michelle Hardy. She schedules the vasectomy appointments at the Lansing Institue of Urology in East Lansing.

"Gentlemen tend to plan it around what basketball games are going on. Like for the MSU game, we had a ton of people call and try to get in [Thursday], so they could have the day off to watch," said Hardy.

It's not the only clinic that's noticed the trend.

"We have seen a pick up," said Alwine. "I think this week, we've seen an increase in our vasectomies. I know [Friday] we have four or five on the schedule."

Doctors say the recovery process can take anywhere from one day to two weeks and that means lots of sitting of the couch and watching March Madness.

"Usually it's just your feet up, light activity around the house, maybe some ice, but overall pain is not severe," said Alwine.
