Large Employer Brings Jobs, Expands in Hillsdale County

JONESVILLE, Mich. (WLNS) - One of the largest employers in Hillsdale County is adding more than 130 additional jobs in Jonesville and North Adams.

In 2009, Martinrea opened its Jonesville facility. Now the company that manufacturers parts for the auto industry is investing $23 million to expand and is planning to build an additional facility in the neighboring town of North Adams.

"The company has another facility in Springfield, Tennessee and that's where these jobs would have gone if we weren't able to bring them to Michigan," said Adam Smith, the Jonesville manager.

Smith says offering the company the maximum 12-year tax abatement under Michigan law helped. Excited that the region worked together to make it happen, he says economic development knows no bounds.

More jobs in one community means more opportunity in another.

"Whether that's children in your school systems, people eating in your downtown restaurants, people purchasing houses in your subdivision, there is benefit to the creation of jobs and it doesn't matter what municipality they locate in," said Smith.

The economic development group in Hillsdale County expects the company to start filling those jobs within the year. The economic development group in Hillsdale is already looking to hire welders. Interested candidates should contact them.
