Jerks Burn Couch After Spartan Loss

The streets of East Lansing remained relatively quiet after a Sweet 16 loss to Duke.

As of 1:15 a.m., there were only limited reports of damage - including a couch fire in the middle of Louis Street. The street is in a triangle formed by Grand River and Michigan Avenues and Harrison Road. It's near the campus of Michigan State University.

There was also a report of a dumpster fire near an apartment complex on Abbott Road in East Lansing. Firefighters put it out quickly and there was no substantial damage.

Those reports are relatively tame compared to the full-scale riots that took place on numerous occasions following basketball games. Those riots date back at least 15 years. One of the biggest - back in 1999 - followed a Final Four loss to Duke.

Police tell 6 News they were prepared to respond if the situation got out of hand.

As of 1:45 a.m. media partners at MLive report that they've seen about a half-dozen couches and futons burned, but no signs of rioting.
