Long-Time Lansing Council Member, Sandy Allen, Dies

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Long-time Lansing council member, Sandy Allen, died early Tuesday morning.

She previously acted as the secretary to a Michigan Senator and was an executive secretary at Michigan National Bank. Allen then served as a council member for four terms.

Fellow council member Carol Wood said she was instrumental in getting the south-side community center up and running. In honor of her work within the community, the Lansing City Council presented Allen renamed the Lansing School District's Alfreda Schmidt Southside Community Center's Community Room on Monday.

"Sandy Allen was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her dedication to public service was both remarkable and impactful, and her legacy will be long-remembered," said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in a release.

Allen was a mid-Michigan native, having graduated from Eastern High School, Lansing Community College and Michigan State.

She is survived by three children and five grandchildren.
