3 Ticketed, 1 Pending in Connection to Couch Fires

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Three people have been ticketed and a fourth has a pending search warrant in connection to the 12 furniture and other fires in East Lansing following Michigan State's loss to Duke in the NCAA tournament.

Police say this is something that is not going to be taken lightly.

East Lansing City Attorney Tom Yeadon says at this point, all four involved are men and he is asking for the maximum penalty he can issue on the fourth person, which would be up to 90 days in jail and or a $500 fine. Yeadon authorized a warrant Wednesday that included a charge of an offense relating to a riot or unlawful assembly near a university.

Based on a state statue that was created in 1999, a court could order a person to not enter a public or community college or university for a year following their sentence for unlawful assembly within 2,500 feet of a public university

Michigan State officials say they are letting the City of East Lansing handle the investigation because it didn't occur on campus.

Names have not been released.

Friday night's game against Duke ended Michigan State's season. East Lansing has been site of several past disturbances, including fire-setting.
