6 News Exclusive: Kemp Family Speaks Out, Appeals Murder Charges

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The family of Mercedes Kemp, the 21-year-old woman convicted of second-degree murder, torture and child abuse in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son, Brandon Kemp, says they are appealing a judge's decision to send Kemp to prison for 25-50 years.

The family maintains Kemp's innocence, and insists it was Kemp's live-in boyfriend, Marcus Hill, who's guilty of the crime. He has been charged in the case and will stand trial later this month.

Mercedes Kemp's mother, LaDonna Morrell, says Hill abused not just Brandon, but Mercedes and her daughter as well. Morrell says she tried on multiple occasions to get police and CPS to intervene, but she says there wasn't enough effort made to save her family.

"It took them over a month and a half to get into my daughter's apartment, and once they got in, they [saw] my grandchildren and my daughter abused. [Brandon] had a bump on his forehead, and they still did not remove my grandchildren. They left them there," says Morrell. "A couple of weeks later, my grandson was murdered. I kept calling CPS, kept calling the police, and nobody helped."

Kemp's family says they've filed an appeal with the courts, hoping to get Kemp out of jail sooner. They are now also fighting to get custody of Kemp's oldest child Tyanna, who's now in foster care.
