MSU Renaming Ag Building to Honor Sen. Morrill

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State University is renaming Agriculture Hall as the Justin S. Morrill Hall of Agriculture.

The change honors the former U.S. senator who pushed to establish land grant universities. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act into law in 1862.

A renaming ceremony will be held this fall.

Fred Poston is dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He says it's fitting to honor Morrill because the law he championed spurred Congress to fund agriculture experiment stations and cooperative extension services, which remain central to Michigan State's mission.

Another building named for Morrill on the East Lansing campus has deteriorated and is scheduled for demolition.
