House Panel Takes up Michigan Road-Funding Bills

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A key lawmaker working to raise more money for Michigan roads says he hopes to recommend a package of bills for consideration by early May.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Wayne Schmidt says a plan in the works could generate at least $1.5 billion a year more. Road funding advocates say they're more optimistic because Schmidt's committee took testimony Tuesday on actual legislation.

That may be a positive sign because so far legislators haven't acted on bills despite Gov. Rick Snyder calls to do so. Schmidt is a Traverse City Republican, and his bills would effectively raise the 19-cents-a-gallon gasoline tax and exempt the sales tax from fuel purchases.

Voters could be asked to raise the sales tax on other purchases to ensure schools and local governments don't lose aid.
