Retired Generals: Support Early Education Funding

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A group of retired generals and Michigan lawmakers is backing a proposal to boost funding for a preschool program for kids at risk of failing.

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Thomas Cutler was joined by Republican Sens. Howard Walker of Traverse City and Roger Kahn of Saginaw and Republican Reps. Bill Rogers of Brighton and Joe Haveman of Holland at the state Capitol on Thursday.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder's proposed budget calls for an additional $65 million next year for the Great Start Readiness Program.

Cutler says strong early education programs are essential for a robust economy and national security. He says almost 30,000 children in Michigan eligible for Great Start Readiness, preschool special education or Head Start are currently not receiving the services they need.
