Lansing Zoo to Host Annual Arbor Day Celebration


LANSING, Mich. (AP) - More than 1,100 elementary school students are expected to attend an Arbor Day celebration Friday at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

The second- and third-graders attend 18 schools. They'll participate in hands-on activities focusing on trees, water wildlife and related ecosystems.

A number of state and local government agencies and businesses are sponsoring the event, which will include a noon ceremony for planting the state Arbor Day tree.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it also will sponsor educational programs related to Arbor Day throughout the weekend.

Kevin Sayers is coordinator of the department's urban forestry program. He says it's important for recognize the importance of trees in the natural environment and human communities.
