Teenager Dead After Being Hit By Train

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, Mich. (WLNS) -- A 16-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a train.

The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m., as the teenager was walking home from school along the tracks that run just west of downtown Charlotte.

The superintendent at Charlotte Public Schools said the teenager was a sophomore at the high school.

Yesterday afternoon police blocked off the railroad crossing between Clinton and Shepherd streets while they investigated.

It is a very difficult time for both the teenager's family and for the community.

"We have victim advocates with the family at this time and they have other family members and certaintly we are very distressed as they all about the whole incident and we feel terrible for them, but they're receiving what support they can at this time," said Charlotte Police Chief William Callahan.

This is also a very emotional time for students and staff at Charlotte High School. The building will be open today from 9 a.m. until noon. Grief counselors will be on hand for anyone who wants to talk.
