National Foster Care Month Holds '30-30-30'

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- May marks National Foster Care Month, so to honor foster families across Michigan, the Foster Care Navigator Program put together a month-long special event.

The organization is granting 30 wishes for 30 foster families in 30 days. Some people called their plan impossible, but the overwhelming support from the community is proving them wrong, and it's surprising many deserving foster families.

"I couldn't believe it," said foster parent Ann Christensen. "I've been in this for so many years. I couldn't believe it because I'm not in it for rewards. My rewards are watching the kids grow."

Over the past 20 years, Christensen and her husband, Gene, have helped over 100 teenage foster children.

The Christensen's are just one of eight families honored today, one of 30 honored this month and one of 102 nominated throughout the state.

However, these families wishes aren't for tropical vacations or fancy cars. Many of the families just want basketball hoops, bicycles or a family passes to the zoo.

"It's just so important to realize that these families are working so hard and doing so much that that's all they really need," said event co-chair Melissa Covell. "They just want a little help with dinner and a movie."

The Christensen's wish is for new carpeting for a bedroom.

"We have three boys in that room," said Christensen. "We have one that came from horrible circumstances, so it's been rough up there."

Thanks to generous donations, their wish will soon be granted.
