Students Celebrate Bike To School Day

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Thousands of Michigan students, parents and teachers are gearing up to participate in events for the second annual Bike to School Day.

Bike to School Day will be observed nationally Wednesday. The Michigan Fitness Foundation and the Michigan Department of Transportation say that more than 80 Michigan schools will be hosting events or activities aimed at encouraging students to ride their bikes.

The celebration in Michigan has been organized by the state's Safe Routes to School Program, which ensures that children have safe routes to walk and bike to school.

Program coordinator Linda Patrick says in a statement that the day helps raise awareness for safer biking and walking routes while also encouraging physical activity and concern for the environment.
