Encouraging Urban Gardening In Flint Schools

FLINT, Mich. (AP) - A company that's leading a cross-country trek to encourage urban gardening and deliver plants and produce is stopping at a Flint school.

The Burpee Home Gardens "Grow Anywhere Tour" plans to park Friday at Flint's Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary School. Organizers say they will deliver 1,300 pounds of produce and 500 vegetable plants.

They also will provide gardening support materials in an effort to encourage "the community to grow its own produce."

Durant-Tuuri-Mott plans to create its own urban garden.

Flint, which has struggled with blight, crime, joblessness and population loss, has been identified by agricultural experts as a place with "food deserts." Such areas have little or no access to supermarkets that sell fresh and affordable foods.
