Bernero Officially Announces Plan to Run for 3rd Term

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - It's official: Mayor Virg Bernero's name will be on the Lansing ballot this fall.

Bernero held a press conference Friday afternoon to announce his plans for a third term. He was first elected in 2005.

Before that announcement, the Lansing City Council met to discuss various budgets, including the mayor's salary. There was also a presentation from the Coalition of Lansing Union Employees.

Among the uncertain details remains whether the mayor's proposed Board of Water & Light fee, his primary means of covering the $5.5 million defecit, is legally a fee or a tax which would require a taxpayer vote of approval.

to keep city lights and hydrants running properly. He says he's confident it will be ruled as a fee, but that his legal team is preparing a back-up plan just in case.

The mayor says people in Lansing are willing to pay the less than $4 a month fee

6 News reached out to the city attorney both Monday and Friday to get more information on what that plan may include, but she was unable to speak with us either day.
