TMSG: McLaren Celebrates Nurses Week

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Friday concludes "National Nurses Week" and it's been a busy one for nurses from McLaren Greater Lansing. They've been all over the city, trying to "pay it forward."

"I think being a nurse is the greatest job in the world. I've been with McLaren for 34 years and I love going to work everyday."

But this week, work is at the Women's Center of Greater Lansing in honor of National Nurses Week. They say rather than asking for people's thank yous, they decided to give back by checking blood pressure, glucose levels, cholesterol and even one-on-one counseling.

"There was a lady whose cholesterol levels were in the danger zone, and she had no idea. We recommended she follow up with her physician and she was very greatful for that," said Julie Murray, a McLaren Greater Lansing nurse.

"For women who don't have access to health care, that can be a lifesaver," said Cindie Alwood, the executive director of the Women's Center of Greater Lansing.

In addition to the free screenings these nurses have provided this week, they also took part in a scrub drive and brought in more than 150 pairs of scrubs.

"It's amazing when you see someone come in, go through the closet, come out and they are so happy to have access to something really nice to wear that they feel good in."

McLaren nurses also delivered coffee and donuts to some first responders and have been raising thousands of dollars for scholarship programs.
