Mail Carriers Prepare for Stamp Out Hunger

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) - Saturday marks the National Letter Carriers Food Drive. Leave non-perishable food items in, or next to, your mailbox for your mail person to pick up.

Letter Carrier Aaron Stern says it is his favorite work day of the year because the food drive brings out the true spirit of Jackson, his hometown.

"They were giving when they probably shouldn't have been. It's just that kind of community in Jackson. They give when they actually should be taking," said Stern.

Every mailbox in the country has been stuffed with a plastic bag and flyer. Stamp Out Hunger is the country's largest one-day food drive and East Lansing Mayor Diane Goddeeris says it couldn't come at a better time.

"Especially in the summer when children are out of school and don't have those food programs, we need to help replenish those supplies so we can help our community members in need," said Goddeeris.

Donations from Jackson residents will go the Salvation Army Food Pantry, where many of the shelves are bare.

"They see Kettle and Bells and they think Christmas with Salvation Army, but we're here 365 days a year," said Kim Conant with the Salvation Army.

Conant says they could use any non-perishable foods, but especially foods kids like, such as soup or cereal.

"Oh peanut butter. It's definitely a favorite. We have tuna fish that we give out as well, but I think the kids will choose the peanut butter over the tuna fish," she says.

Back on his route, Stern says this food drive is different, not just because of the free pick-up. "People give to their community. It's really local. It's actually within blocks, not within miles here."

Food collected in Lansing will be distributed by the Greater Lansing Food Bank to food banks throughout the Lansing area. Jackson donations will go to the Salvation Army and will be equally disbursed to the 30 plus food banks there.
