Mail Carriers Collect Food for Lansing Food Banks

Rita Delazaro's regular mail route doesn't normally have her picking up anything but mail. Today, she's made room in the truck for grocery bags full of food.

"We have seen an increase steadily through the last few years," said Delazaro.

Delazaro's picking up donations for the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

Once a year, carriers ask their regulars to leave whatever non-perishable items they can on the porch.

"Each year, we donate to the food bank," said Lansing resident Glenna Miller.

Miller's been in this her current neighborhood, on the donation route, since the program started over twenty years ago.

"Couldn't be more convenient than just putting it right outside your door, or right by your mailbox," said Miller.

"We still have a great need for food, and our needs are still growing in the Greater Lansing Food Bank," said Kim Gladstone, the food bank's development manager.

She says the project's had overwhelming support from the community, including hundreds of junior high student volunteers from the Lansing school district.

Gladstone says they'll need every one of them to handle the generous load of donations.

"About a hundred and sixty eight thousand pounds was donated last year. We're hopeful we can at least meet that amount," said Gladstone.

She says even a single item per household, makes a big difference for those battling hunger in the community.
