Trial Begins For Man Charged With Scalding, Torturing Babies

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) - The trial for a Jackson man charged with first-degree child abuse and torture began Monday. Jury selection began Monday morning. The trial is expected to start later Monday afternoon.

Police say Daniel Ronquillo, 25, forced his girlfriend's two young children into a scolding hot bathtub of nearly 140 degrees, back in May of 2012. The kids were 1 and 2-years-old. Both children suffered third degree burns and spent months at the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital.

At the preliminary hearing last July, Ronquillo testified that he put the babies in the bath, left to do some dishes and said they must have turned the faucet.

But a U of M doctor testified that the burns were consistent with child abuse. The children didn't have burns on their hands only the lower half of their bodies.

Ronquillo is a registered sex offender for a 2005 conviction for second degree attempted criminal sexual conduct.

If convicted, he faces life in prison for torture.
