New Residential Project Coming to Downtown Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Downtown Lansing's riverfront continues to change, as construction begins on a brand new residential project. Right along the Grand River next to the new City Market, a multi-story development will soon bring more housing to downtown Lansing.

The building will be an 80 unit, five story river front apartment complex.

"We're excited to get rolling and there's a big demand for people who want to live downtown right now," said Pat Gillespie, the president of Gillespie Group.

What now houses tons of torn up concrete will soon transform into a highly anticipated urban community, blending into the River Walk's Contemporary construction and further promoting the city's progress.

"We're really starting to have a great place for people to live and work and have fun and I think it really represents the city of Lansing and the region in a great way," said Bob Trezise, president/CEO of the Lansing Economic Area Partnership.

It's more than just 80 new riverfront apartments, many people say the project will bring even more excitement and energy to downtown Lansing. Those changes Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said will shine a light on downtown and the city as a whole.

"The bottom line is you need people living downtown and when quality housing is built in the downtown so we have every reason to believe, we believe along with the developer that there's a market for it. There's a demand for it and when you get people living downtown, you get more and more amenities downtown and it will just continue to lead to success," said Mayor Bernero.

The developer said he expects the complex to be finished by the end of 2014.
