Annual Picnic Held to Honor Local Safety Patrols

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Hundreds have gathered in honor of Police Week at Hawk Island Park in Lansing to say thank you to local safety patrols.

The annual "Police and Fire Field Day and Safety Patrol Picnic" started at 9a.m. Wednesday. There's food, games and face painting for the kids. Other attractions include fire trucks, police helicopters and local k-9 units.

Organizers say the event is a great way to thank the safeties for helping to keep kids safe.

"Well, this is kind of the reward for these kids who work hard all year on those corners. Sometimes put up with some grief from their classmates, they're out there whether it's sunny like today or whether it's ten degrees above zero and snowing," said Don Vickers with the Lansing Safety Council.

There are currently more than 1,000 safety patrols throughout the Tri-County Area.
