Ronquillo Found Guilty of First Degree Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) - A jury has found Daniel Ronquillo's guilty of two counts of first degree child abuse, after forcibly holding his girlfriend's two young children in a bathtub, then filling it with scalding hot water.

The conviction carries a maximum of 15 years in prison, but because he has a previous felony conviction, he faces a maximum of 22.5 years.

Testimony lasted for two and half days, including when Ronquillo took the stand Wednesday, maintaining it was a terrible accident. Jury deliberations took nearly ten hours and both the prosecution and defense say they respect the outcome.

Ronquillo was originally charged with first degree child abuse and torture for allegedly forcing his girlfriend's two young children into scalding bath water.

When he was first charged, the law stated that first degree child abuse carried a maximum sentence of 15 years. One month later, Michigan changed and it's not a life offense. Ronquillo is expected to be sentenced in July.
