Pinched Albion to Close Only High School This Fall

ALBION, Mich. (AP) - Albion Public Schools is no longer offering students a high school education.

The school board has decided that beginning this fall, only students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be taught by the district.

It voted 5-1 Wednesday night to shut down Albion High School. The district says a $1 million budget deficit could approach $8 million within 5 years if not addressed.

A deficit of just under $110,000 is expected with the high school's closing. The mid-Michigan district is losing revenue due to declining enrollment.

Board president Al Pheley says about 170 students attend Albion High. It's not yet known what high school or schools Albion students will attend in the fall.

Albion is in talks with the nearby Marshall Schools.
