Lansing City Council Finalizes Budget with Amendments

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Lansing's City Council finalized a budget Friday morning which includes multiple amendments by a 7-1 vote.

Among the most notable, additions to the original budget include a 1.2 percent increase to the Board of Water and Light's return on equity, the annual payment BWL makes to the city of Lansing in lieu of taxes.

BWL currently pays 5 percent of its revenue to Lansing. The 1.2 percent increase would bring the total to $4,033,000, according to estimates worked out by both BWL and city council members.

"What we tried to do is come up with cuts and those additional revenues to look at eliminating the proposal for the increase in the rates for electric and hydrants," said councilmember Brian Jeffries.

"We've increased the millage in this city as high as it can go. We've cut services dramatically and people are just saying we can't afford any more increases," said Jeffries.

Taking into account city council's other amendments, council members say their latest budget addresses the city's $5.5 million defecit without new fees for all BWL customers, which was the centerpiece of Mayor Virg Bernero's original budget.

BWL Spokesman Steve Serkaian says the company wants to help Lansing in any way it can, and will consider accepting a higher payment as long as it goes through the proper budgeting channels.

Council will present their amended budget to the mayor at the upcoming city council meeting on Monday, at which time the mayor will either accept or veto the budget.

In a statement to WLNS, the mayor's office says Virg Bernero is evaulating the councils proposals and will have more to say about them on Monday.
