Officials to Kick Off Michigan Seat Belt Campaign

Posted:

Law enforcement officials across Michigan will be enforcing federally funded safety belt enforcement zones through the coming Memorial Day travel weekend.

Michigan's seat belt usage rate has declined over the past three years after leading the nation in 2008 and 2009. Accroding to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Plannig, Michigan has declined to 93.6 percent from nearly 98 percent.

"It's about a $65 ticket, but we're really trying to get people to wear it on their own, we can save lives that way," said Lt. Kyle Bowman with Michigan State Police. He says officers will be in the designated zones looking for passengers with no seatbelt on.

Seat belt check points are all across Michigan, stretching 26 counties, until the end of Memorial Day weekend.

Almost half of people killed in crashes are unbuckled.
