Family Upset After Dog Escapes Clinic, Hit By Car

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - When you take your pet to the vet, you expect a healthy and safe return, but for a Lansing family, the visit ended in heart break when they found their dog dead on the side of the road.

"This is Cheka, our dog, two weeks before we took her to the vet. We miss her dearly. We know you're in doggy heaven girl and we love you so much," said Mike Mireles behind teary eyes.

Mireles took his family dog to Comprehensive Animal Hospital for surgery with Doctor Agbona last week. He says everything seemed ok until "he called saying the dog ran away."

Cheka went missing from the animal hospital Thursday morning and was found Saturday just blocks away, near the corner of Jolly and Christensen.

"I found the dog dead two blocks from the clinic," said Mireles.

Dr. Abolarin Agbona did not want to be interviewed on camera, but did speak to 6 News over the phone. He says teh dog escaped while going out for a walk. He says he feels sorry and wishes this never happened and must deal with the consequences.

"We wish we would have never taken our dog there. We should have checked the reviews first and we're sorry, Cheka, that we didn't do that," he said.

When checking those reviews, they're generally positive, but Dr. Agbona admited Cheka is not the first dog to escape his clinic.

"I know accidents happen and I know mistakes are made, but this happened five years ago and then it happened again."

Dr. Agbona offered to refund the surgery fees and cremate Cheka for free, but only if the family agreed to drop the matter and move on--an offer they refused.

"He does not know what he did to our family."

Mireles says in addition to taking legal action, he plans to picket in front of the animal hospital this weekend to make sure this tragedy does not happen to any more animals and families.
