The Declaration Of Independence For Lawyers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in our country's history. Tuesday morning, state attorneys gathered at the capital to read it.

This is the second year they've participated, and this is the second day lawyers have been in the spotlight. Yesterday, Governor Rick Snyder signed into law programs aimed at improving court appointed attorneys.

This move isn't sitting will with some defense attorneys in the area.

"More work and no more money. Not one cent at all has been allocated to indigent defenders. I still go in and I get my same paycheck and I do my same work. I do it with spirit, I believe in the work. But now, I will have to file reports with some state agency that knows nothing about indigent defense. It is a step backwards," said Barry Poulson, indigent defense attorney for Hillsdale County.

The bills create state wide standards for public defenders.
