Online Scam Names ELPD

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) was recently named in an online scam.

A victim in Charlotte was surfing the web when a pop-up window appeared stating that ELPD and Homeland Security had frozen their computer due to a security risk. It stated that $300 had to be paid to have the computer returned to full use. The victim in this case paid the $300 to an unknown third party via the Internet.

ELPD is aware of the scam and would like community members to be aware of the incident as well. Community members are advised to contact their local police department if they have ever been a victim of this or a similar scam.
