Authorities say five people, including two children, were hurt in a suburban Detroit neighborhood when fireworks set off in a street went awry.

The Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, WWJ-AM and others report a mortar tipped over Thursday night and shot into a Sterling Heights garage. Officials say the people in the area were injured and the 8-year-old girls were taken to a nearby hospital.

The Free Press reports one girl suffered serious injuries and the other minor injuries.

The man who set up the fireworks received a violation.
