Local Agencies Help Elderly Beat The Heat

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- The heat can take a big toll on us all, but it can be especially hard on the elderly.

Many live on fixed incomes and go without air conditioning in the summer months.

79-year-old Thelma Davis dedicates her time to helping elderly people in the tri-county area get help when they need it. "A lot of 'em don't have air conditioners, some of 'em don't even have fans," said Davis.

Whenever the elderly has a problem, the Tri-County Office on Aging's info assistance line is the first place many call. "Usually they will call Tri-County for everything, no matter what it is. And we always try to help. We never leave people hanging. Because I'm a senior and I wouldn't want anybody to leave me like that either," said Davis.

The tri-county Office on Aging also oversees Meals on Wheels. Many of the volunteers who deliver food keep an extra eye out on the elderly when the weather gets hot.

Tri-County Office on Aging says that "during this type of heat, we're checking on them often."

"I pay attention to, 'Are they dressed properly? Do they look like they're feeling well? Do they look healthy," said Rebecca Valesquez, a volunteer. When they don't during this weather, it's usually because they're dehydrated.

"A lot of the seniors we see don't remember to drink often and drink a lot. They don't move a lot and they don't remember to drink. Hydration is very important," said Jolene Hazen, Tri-County Social worker.
