Captain John, Owner Of Michigan Princess, Dies

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)- John Chamberlain, the captain and the owner of the Michigan Princess, has died.

Best known "Captain John" - Chamberlain was known and loved by the thousands of people who sailed on the Michigan Princess over the years. According to its website, 600,000 passengers have sailed on the ship since 1991, including 250 weddings and one divorce party.

The boat also served as home to many proms and other special events.

Chamberlain was well known not just because of the passengers he met, but because he has also starred in many of the commercials for the triple-decker riverboat.

The Michigan Princess announced the news on its Facebook page, saying "Captain John is no longer with us but he is sailing off to his one particular harbor (his favorite Jimmy Buffet song)."

Fans of the captain also shared their condolences.

"I was so lucky to have sailed on the Princess and listened to Capt'n John tell his story of her," said Sue Webb. "His memories and his story telling took me on a trip through the past, and then we sailed the Grand with him at the helm. It was my last day in Michigan, and I'll never forget him or her."

"I had the great pleasure of talking to Captain John on numerous occasions about the Michigan Princess and it was always apparent how much he loved what he did," said Jenna Poag. "My heart goes out to his family and friends in this hard time.

Captain John also ran the Grand Princess, which sailed in Grand Ledge, and the Detroit Princess.

Chamberlain, who spent the last couple of days in the hospital with heart-related problems, was 66-years-old.

Visitation for Captain John will be on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge.

His funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m at the Grace Lutheran Church at 528 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Lansing.
