Fire Dept. Trainee Charged With Arson

Posted: Updated:

DEWITT, Mich. (WLNS) - Less than a week after a fire tore through DeWitt's Alana Woods Apartment Complex, officials determined the cause was arson.

Now they're charged a suspect and his relation to the fire department and the apartment complex makes it all even more shocking.

Police believe Matthew Landfair, 36, intentionally set fire to the complex on July 14th. Landfair not only lived there, he's also been a DeWitt Fire Department trainee since October 2012.

Scott Schroeder, a neighbor of Landfair, says he lived in the top right of the apartment complex.

The fire destroyed his apartment, along with 11 others that remain a total loss.

"In this case, there's allegedly 12 different units and when you set that unit on fire, it's almost like setting 12 different residents on fire," said Michael Clarizo, the assistant prosecutor in Clinton County.

The State of Michigan filed a felony complaint against Landfair. They believe he willingly set the apartment complex on fire. Friday, they charged him with one count of first degree arson, which carries the possibility of life in prison, plus fines.

In less than a year, two other fires also hit the area. The first at the Clinton County Home Center the evening of November 29th. It sat just in front of Alana Woods Apartments and even caused one of the unit's minor damage. The second fire, in June, blazed through the woods behind a different apartment complex within Alana Woods. Now, all three fires remain under investigation.

Landfair is being held without bond in the Clinton County Jail.

He is expected back in court on August 1.
