Doctor Puts A Twist On Old-Fashioned Health Care With Private Practice And House Calls

Posted: Updated:

If you are willing to pay more for health care, you can get the best, including plenty of personal attention from doctors who practice privately and have far less patients. This is the case for Dr. Sarah Davis who has changed her practice in order to better serve her patients.

"For me, it has brought the love of medicine back," said Sarah Davis, MD/Family Doctor.

Frustrated with packed waiting rooms, mounting paperwork, and falling reimbursements, Dr. Davis is one of thousands of physicians abandoning traditional practices in favor of 'concierge' or private medicine. Her entire practice is now limited to roughly 100 patients-instead of rushing through sometimes 40 appointments in a single day.

"There are studies that say doctors interrupt patients, I think about, every 7 seconds… and I was becoming one of those doctors. they'd start to tell their stories. But, I didn't have time to hear the whole story. I'd just need to get the details, get a diagnosis, get them their prescription and move on to the next person."

Now, Davis' patients pay an annual fee for an extensive physical, lab work and unlimited office visits.

"Now, I get to decide what's best for my patients, and if it takes two hours to talk to them that day, then that's how long it takes."

"Fees for this personalized care can range from a few thousand dollars a year to as much as $50,000 in some parts of the country," said Dr. Davis.

"I would pay three times what I pay for that level of service because it is a huge time saver," said Patient Gene Carter. Carter has been with Dr. David since the very beginning and says what he's really paying for is personal attention.

"Personal attention of a very qualified physician, I try not to abuse that with Dr. Davis. But, whenever I need to, if I have an especially busy day it's a great convenience to have her come to your office or come to your home."

Dr. Davis says having fewer patients has allowed her more time to just be a mom.
