IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) - Police are investigating an accident that left one person in critical condition in Ionia County.

It happened Wednesday night just after 11 p.m. near the intersection of Kent and Market Street in Danby Township. A 51-year-old Sunfield man was heading south when he lost control of his moped and crashed.

Police say sometime after that crash, while the man was lying in the street, he was hit by a car. Officials say the 19-year-old Portland woman who was driving the car tried to stop when she saw the man in the road, but it was too late.

The man was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. According to police, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.

The driver of the moped was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
