Hundreds Line Up For HopCat Grand Opening

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - HopCat East Lansing broke the world record of having 71 beers on top, topping it with the new record of 100.

There were 450 people waiting in line for opening at 11:00 a.m., some even starting as early as 9:30p.m. Wednesday. They were wrapped all the way from Grove Street to Park and Linden near the East Lansing Police Department.

Besides the beer, this bar is going to have an impact on the East Lansing economy. HopCat created 90 jobs that weren't there before, including servers, waiters and cooks.

"It's been six months in the making and it's really exciting for me to have this day finally be here," said owner Mark Sellers.

Garry Boyd, ringleader at Barfly Ventures adds that when HopCat is at capacity, he will be encouraging patrons in line to visit other bars that sell Michigan brewed beers.

"When we are busy we hope our neighbors are busy too," said Boyd.

Although the bar is in an area where there are plenty of undergraduate bars, Sellers says that HopCat will attract an older crowd from graduate students and beyond. The bar focuses on homemade food and brewed beers, making it different in the East Lansing area.
