Residents Find A Mess While Moving Into Apartments

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Imagine paying your rent a month in advance, it's moving day and when you show up and get your keys, you walk into a mess.

Both parents and students couldn't imagine the mess they'd walk into when they opened the door to their apartment at the Villages in Chandler Crossing.

"The floors where dirty, the bathrooms, there was poop on the seat, like old razors, hair balls," said River Jensen, a freshman at MSU.

And Jensen isn't the only one with concerns about poor conditions both outside and inside.

"A minority might say that, but not a majority," said Gerry Sawyer, who represents West Pac Campus Community.

Sawyer says Friday was the last day of a $9 million, 250 bedroom remodeling process that happened to fall on move-in day.

"We're putting in new flooring, new stainless steel appliances, yeah you'll get dust but we'll bring in our cleaning crew and clean it up," said Sawyer.

Clearly, it wasn't just dust collecting in Jensen's apartment.

"That's obviously not our construction people or our cleaning people that may have been left by a previous tenant, i don't know the circumstances," said Sawyer. "The point I'm getting at is we do go to every unit, I can't say what happens afterwords."

Sawyer says those that have been inconvienced were offered hotels for the night in some cases, gift cards and assurance their rooms will be cleaned and that their experience will be top-notch from here on out.

Jensen says sadly the damage has already been done. "It's a nice place once it's clean. It just sucks that we had to see it so disgusting now the image that we have of it."

Sawyer did tell 6 News he planned facing a few more concerns after we spoke with him. He also said if you have a dirty apartment, expect it to be cleaned by tomorrow
