Tea Party Leader To Challenge Lt. Gov. Calley

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan tea party leader plans to challenge Lt. Gov. Brian Calley in 2014 to protest policies of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

Wes Nakagiri of Livingston County's Hartland Township made the announcement Monday.

He says he's running to bring a "conservative voice" to the Snyder administration and is particularly upset the governor supports Medicaid expansion. While gubernatorial candidates are chosen in primary elections, their running mates are picked by delegates at party conventions.

In 2010, tea party activists insisted on a roll call vote for lieutenant governor even though the more moderate Snyder named Calley his running mate.

Calley said last week he's a "conservative voice" in Snyder's ear and said regular tea party voters will look at the totality of what the Snyder administration has accomplished and be supportive.
