MDA Telethon Won't Air On WLNS After Almost 50 Years

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNA) - A very special program annually aired on Channel 6 won't be on our station this year. After almost 50 years, the Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon, usually hosted by WLNS, decided to move to ABC.

An end of an era of familiar faces for a familiar cause, this year's telethon will be different.

"One of the biggest changes is that we are moving from a three hour show to a two hour show that's going to be nationally syndicated on ABC Network," said Erica Bills, the executive director for MDA.

That means there won't be any local segments from the people here at Channel 6.

"I think of course when you are taking a piece away from a local aspect, you are going to miss that personal section, so that is a little bit difficult," said Bills.

MDA says they will be able to accomplish their goals without running as long as before. "The two hour time slot its still going to be able to cover what we will able to raise, who was able to raise the money for us and still highlight a lot of the advancements that we've made in research for our patients," she says.

The non-profit organization says it decided to make the jump to ABC to reach a broader audience. "Our coverage is going to be much greater across the country, so we are going to be able to raise awareness and promote what we are doing."

MDA assures donations will still go towards the local chapters in the community. "We're planning on using the area code that your calling or texting from, as well as the zip code if you go to mda.org to make a donation."

Despite the program changes, all the money raised is still going to the same cause, to help those with muscular dystrophy.

The telethon will air on Sunday from 9 to 11 pm.
