Life, No Parole In Drive-By Shooting Death Of Girl

Posted: Updated:

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - A man convicted of killing a 6-year-old Saginaw girl in a drive-by shooting has received the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A Saginaw County Circuit Court jury found 23-year-old Levonne J. Greer guilty of first-degree murder in July in the Aug. 29, 2012, slaying of Layla Jones.

Before Judge Darnell Jackson sentenced Greer on Tuesday, the convict expressed "condolences to the victim's family" and said his "heart goes out to them."

Greer also says he'll be appealing and "getting home as soon as possible."

Prosecutors say Greer and three others went to Saginaw's northeast side to avenge the shooting death of a friend earlier in the day.

Defense lawyer Joseph Scorsone says Greer and another man didn't shoot until someone fired at their vehicle.
