Michigan To Review Finances Of 2 Communities

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Treasury says it will start preliminary reviews of the finances of two Detroit-area communities on Monday.

The reviews for the City of Highland Park and Oakland County's Royal Oak Township are a step in a process that can lead to state oversight, including the appointment of an emergency manager. The department says it notified the communities Wednesday of the planned reviews.

The state says Highland Park and Royal Oak Township both have failed to deposit minimum pension payments in a timely manner, violated requirements of the uniform budgeting and accounting act, and failed to follow approved deficit elimination plans.

The department has 30 days to complete the preliminary reviews. After other steps, a determination will be made about their financial conditions.
